The spring was very dry, flowering very late, the summer very wet – until late summer, the conditions for a good wine year were anything but favorable. But then came the fall! September and October brought a decidedly stable weather situation with sunny days and cool nights. In seven weeks there was just half a day of rain – these are dream conditions for the grape harvest.
We started harvesting on October 4 and, due to the excellent conditions, finished as quickly as rarely before. The grape material presented itself extremely healthy and in optimal ripeness. Our cellar master Michael Nastl, at least, can’t remember such a beautiful harvest: “A dream acidity, perfect sugar gradation and the quantity was right, too!” What does that promise for the 2021 vintage? A lot! As it looks at the moment, one can assume a better vintage than 2019, and already this one has produced incredibly fine wines.
